So you don’t have a fancy design or photography program, but you want to resize the pictures you just downloaded from your camera to your computer. Sometimes you want to resize them so you can email them to friends or family. Sometimes you just want them to upload faster to Facebook or other social media. Maybe you are uploading them to your website or online store, both of which have a file size limit. High resolution pictures straight from your camera may be too big, and generally anytime you need a picture for online you will need to size it down from a print quality file to a web optimized file. So, what do you resize your images with?
I’ve actually received emails from my clients asking me this question. Due to my job, I have programs that allow me to resize pictures and so at first, I was unfamiliar with online solutions that may help those who are not graphic designers or photographers in doing a task as basic as resizing an image. I did some research and found a few online websites that offer free software to help resize your pictures easy and fast! The best part is that all of them have extra features so you can make basic touch ups, some color editing or add photo effects. Below is a list of the top 4 solutions I personally found to be the most useful:
Picasa is a free photo editing software from Google. It not only allows you to edit and resize your pictures, but also organize and share them easily online. If you want to use Picasa, you will need to download it to your computer. Below is a video introduction to this software:
Picnik is a free online program that recently joined the Google family. This program allows you edit and size your pictures as well as add effects, stickers and frames. It has easy to use photo tools that are great for scrapbooking. The best part is that you can use it in your browser window which means you don’t need to download anything to your computer. They do offer a premium membership (not free, but very affordable) which gives you even more tools and advanced effects.
Splashup is a free and very cool online program that has an interface similar to professional software such as Photoshop. In addition to helping resize images, it also offers more specialized tools and includes a layers panel and image filters. This program is also web-based so there is no need to download anything to your computer.
Pixlr Editor is a free online application by Pixlr.com that also has a more professional interface similar to Photoshop. This editor allows you to resize your images, but like Splashup, it offers specialized tools and panels. It takes it a step further by giving you even more filters and the option to add image adjustments. It is web-based, so it does not require any downloads. If this editor is too advanced for you, Pixlr.com also offers a very basic one called Pixlr Express for quick and easy image editing.
There are many online programs that allow you to resize or edit your images. It is my opinion that the 4 solutions I listed above are worth a try! I hope you find the one that works best for you, and if you know of other online photo editors that you think are great, feel free to share them by leaving a comment!
