Feeling Like An Imposter

Feeling Like An Imposter

I’ve never met anyone who hasn’t experienced some form of imposter syndrome: the feeling of self-doubt and fear of being exposed as a fraud, even in the face of evident success and external validation.

As a graphic designer, I often struggle with similar thoughts, especially when social media is flooded with sped-up process videos that make designers look like magicians, creativity sparking in seconds, and graphics appearing with a touch of a finger. Even I, who does this for a living, can be fooled by these polished portrayals.

I’ve been a professional graphic designer for nearly 20 years, with 16 of those running my own business. Despite working on hundreds of projects and having a long list of happy customers, I still have days when I feel like I’m not up to par.

On the upside, imposter syndrome can be a motivator for growth and improvement. When my confidence takes a hit, I fight back my insecurity by setting new goals and learning new skills. It keeps me driven and constantly pushing myself to be better. How do you combat imposter syndrome in your own career?
