Google Fonts

We all love beautiful fonts, and there is one place that holds a vast collection of free fonts that most people outside of the design community may not know about.

Google Fonts offers a massive library of licensed fonts that you can preview, embed, download, and use for free. You can use them on websites or download them to your computer. You don’t have to be a designer to access these fonts. Anyone can use them in both personal or commercial projects.

How To Use Google Fonts

Go To Google Fonts

Go to fonts.google.com and start browsing their collection of font families. You can search by name or filter down the options by categories, language, or properties.

Reviewing A Font

Click on the tile of the font you like. It will then display all the relevant information for that font, such as styles, glyphs, who it was designed by, license, and possible pairings.

Using A Google Font On Your Website

Select The Style

Select the font style you want to use by clicking on SELECT THIS STYLE located next to each style option. You can select multiple styles or the entire font family.

Review The Selected Family Window

The SELECTED FAMILY window will slide in from the right side of the screen and it will display your selection. You can hide and show this window by clicking on the icon that looks like three squares and a plus sign, located on the top right of the screen.

Copy The Embed Codes

Within the SELECTED FAMILY window, you will find the codes needed to embed the selected fonts on your website. Copy the codes provided into the <head> section of your site.

If you don’t know how to use the codes, you may want to visit Google’s Getting Started Guide, where they offer detailed instructions on how to add them to your web pages.

Downloading A Google Font To Your Computer

Download The Font Family

Download an entire font family by clicking DOWNLOAD FAMILY located at the top right of the screen.

Uncompress The Zip Files

Uncompress the zip file that downloaded to your computer. It will usually contain the font files along with the license information.

Install The Font

The font files are usually the ones with either OTF (OpenType) or TTF (TrueType) extensions. Install the font on your computer and use them for any project.

If you don’t know how to install fonts, you may have to do an online search specific to your type of computer as the process is different on Macs and on PCs.
